Who was born in the year 364 and is still alive today? Who lives in Madrid, but travels to Holland every year BY BOAT? Who wanders, despite his age, on the roofs of the houses at night? If you have answered "Sinterklaas" on either of these questions, you may consider yourself well-integrated into Dutch culture and society. Congratulations! But, who is this man? Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas) was born in Myra in Western Turkey. The story of this saint did not end with his death and burial. He became a guardian of merchants, sailors and children. This explains why the celebration of his birthday is mainly a childrens' event (and also for merchants, by the way, who profit greatly from the Sint Nicholas happening!). Each year, Saint Nicholas arrives by steamer in a Dutch little port and this event is broadcasted live on television. The saint himself speaks Dutch fluently, but his black servants, the so-called 'zwarte pieten', usually speak with a strong accent. Originally, thes servants represented 'the devil' -held together with a chain by Saint Nicholas, but nowadays the 'zwarte pieten' are real children's friends, who are always handing out peppernuts and other sweets to children.

We never caught Andy on film but here are some shots of the rest of the gang...
Here are The Boys with Their Dowels.
The Het Loo Paleis was the royal summer residence.
The palace grounds are noted for amazing gardens.
Here's a closeup of the gardens.
Just your basic door...
Sarah and Josh in the gardens.

Sarah and Josh in front of the Palace.
An interesting fountain using the Earth.
A pauw struts his stuff (pauw=peacock).
Buddy has his dowel...now what?
Josh and Sarah return from a bike trip - caught in a downpour on the way home.
We visited Park Hoge Veluwe in the center of the Netherlands, a nature reserve and forest
which looks nothing like the rest of the country. In the center of this reserve is a great
museum called the Kroller-Muller, which has incredible collections of Picasso, Van Gogh, Seurat
and many others.
This is Sarah at the Kroller-Muller museum.
Back at the homestead, Sarah and Josh decide to bike over to the video store.

We finally made it to the Vondelpark, Amsterdam's "Central Park".
Today, June 2 (a beautiful day), was the opening of the Openluchttheater (Open Air Theater),
and headlining was a favorite popular band, Twarres, which has several top hits here.
Twarres is from Friesland and has a distinctlly Celtic sound. Very good.
Twarres.
A closer view.
A view of the Openluchttheater.
Rich, Sarah and Josh in the park, as snapped by Ellen.

In the next group is a mixture of pics of Dan on a borrowed brommer, and a visit by us to

called Dordrecht.
Dan apon his friend's brommer.
Another brommer view.
Dan rides off into the, well, Hogerbeetsstraat.
Rich, posing in front of some kind of Biesbosch teepee.
Ellen poses in front of our boat.
A pastoral view from the boat.
A view reminding one of the Everglades.
Typische Nederland - bikes on the boats.
As usual, many, many, many, sheep.
A "sluis" or lock.
A beautiful Ferarri happened to be parked on our street - Dan took the picture.

We finally made it to the Frans Hals Museum (in Haarlem).
Original Delft tiles at the Museum.
A view of the garden at the Museum.
Another garden view.
A cone of frites, a Spa blauw, and mijn vrouw.
Ook Rich met de frites, de Spa blauw, en zo. (Rich heeft mayo met de frites!)
A view of a typical street with the church in the background.
One of Haarlem's quaint streets.
Haarlem's main canal and a traditional Dutch bridge in the background.

A going-away party for Rich given by The Guys. This was quite nice - they even put together
a series of real (and gag) gifts all themed around various Dutch expressions that I liked
and 'tried' to use. Thanks, guys!
Rene's backyard. 'He does his best'. It includes a fish pond and a polynesian cabana.
A barbeque, Dutch style.
It's a long story, but here I receive an empty jar of pindakaas (peanut butter).
Here are The Guys.
We came home via Flevoland and experienced a beautiful sunset.
Another sunset view.
A view (taken while driving on the N305) of the modern Dutch windmills

Kim, Scott, and Michelle are here - we went to Delft.
We visited a different Delft factory, the Delftse Pauw.
A demonstration of the Delft pottery manufacturing stages.
An artist's studio inside the Delftse Pauw.
Kim and company in a giant Dutch wooden shoe.
Taxes in Holland were based on the width of the house. Here's one way to pay less taxes.
One of the towers in Delft is ...just a bit...tilted...
There was a marching band performance in Delft centrum, here's one group...

Chris and Gail Conally had a nice going-away BBQ for us. Lorna, Ellen, Rich, Gail, Chris.
