Ancient Rome!

Pictures, etc.

...from Ancient Rome.
This collection is from the many specific sites (Foro Romano, Palatino) as well as from all over the
city, because almost everywhere you turn, you can see traces of 2000-year-old Rome!.

Front of the Pantheon (pan=all, theon=gods). This was a temple
which was open for worship to anyone, as long as you also worshipped the Emperor.

The 30-foot opening ("oculus") at the top of the Pantheon.

The huge columns in front of the Pantheon.

Some buildings have the ruins incorporated right inside!

At dusk, the Capitolina.

Closeup of Daniel and Ellen at the Capitolina.

Statue at the Capitolina.

The Forum (Foro Romano)from the Capitolina.
That's the Arch of Severus in front. There are three arches here, the two others are Titus' and Constantine's.

The Forum at dusk.

Trajan's Column, a 1600-year old marble history scroll.

Ellen takes a chance at the Bocca Veritas (mouth of truth).

The legend says that if you have a guilty conscience your hand
will be bitten off. We both came back with all hands intact, but Dan didn't try it. Hmmm.

In the Jewish Ghetto, remains of Octavio's palace.

Another view of Trajan's Column.

Bright blue sky, and a classic view of the Collosseum.
The name Collosseum does not come from the size of the place, but from a gigantic statue
of Nero which was placed outside of the stadium.

The view as you enter the Collosseum.

View from the 2nd level down into the chambers which
used to be underneath a wooden floor. Gladiators and wild animals waited here for action.

View of the inside of the Arch of Titus which shows
the pludering of Israel - including the taking of the Menorah from the Temple.

View of the Palatino. You can see St. Peter's Basilica in the background.

From the Museo Romano, an inscribed Jewish tomb marker.
Can you identify the lulav, the menorah, the shofar, and the word "shalom"?
And why Greek? As English is today, it was the most universal language available amongst
the many cultures integrated into greater Rome.
