Pompeii, Napoli, Sorrento!

Pictures, etc.

...from our day trip to Sorrento, Napoli, and Pompeii.
Here are some pictures from a day trip we took south from Rome to Pompeii. We hired a driver, Pino,
who spoke English very well and managed to make 180km/hr (about 120 MPH) seem very smooth. Of course
he was driving a large Mercedes sedan...

A view into the city of Sorrento.

Mount Vesuvius looming in the distance, photo taken from Sorrento.

The beautiful coastline of Sorrento.

A church viewed from a sidestreet in the shopping section of Sorrento.

The island of Capri from the Sorrento coast road.

The three of us in front of Capri.

Beginning the tour of Pompeii, here is one of the temple buildings.
Pompeii was the Roman city of about 20,000 which was destroyed by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 (not 1979, just "79").
It was not lava, but tons of hot ash and mud which in one way killed the city, but in another
gave it an eternal life. The city is extrodinarily well-presereved, having been excavated in the 1700s.

Another view of the temple, featuring its columns.

Here is a plaster cast of "The Mule Driver", one of Pompeii's famous
preserved victims. He was found next to his equally well-preserved mule.

Painted frescoes from the men's public bath.

The most famous tile mosaic in Pompeii - Cave Canem means "Beware of the dog!".

Frescoes from the living room of a wealthy family.

Close-up of a painting of Venus and cupids.

Columns from the Watchama era, aka 'watchamacolumns'.

Taverna Hedonis - one of Pompeii's bars. The city also had over 20 brothels.

Rich and Daniel, Vesuvio, and Pompeii. What a shot.
